A Place for Reconciliation
A Place for Reconciliation
In today’s church, the seasonal Penance Service provides many people with the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance, or Reconciliation. The stations we use for confession tend to be marked by little more than two chairs facing each other, or a chair and a kneeler. The presider points out these places around the room, and everyone finds them by following the first few people that leap up and get in line. Is there a better way to mark these places and, at the same time, create a sacred space?
Consider the difference in feeling between the smaller image and the larger. While the two chairs clearly create a space for intimate conversation, the banner marks the space so it can be seen from a distance. It also defines the character of this conversation as a holy conversation, and perhaps even protected. Where would you prefer to bare your soul?
Even if you have a confessional, a Renew! banner in a smaller size placed outside the door could be a signal that a confessor is available.
